Qi Stag Type – Food and Herbs Recommendation

A Qi Stag type (气郁体质) person tends to be thinner and have a pessimistic nature. You also should not take tonic until your condition improve following the below food / herb suggestion.

The main soup you can drink is white radish. It is inexpensive and has great properties in breaking qi out of stagnate (破气).

Some food / herbs that a Qi Stag type person can consume more are:

Tropical Type – Food and Herbs Recommendation

Tropical type (湿热体质) people often lives in Tropical countries like Singapore and in other parts of Asia. A Tropical type person is more prone to acne (even in adulthood), and often has an oily face too like water stag type. In additional, Tropical type person tends to have a heaty body nature. You should consume more food that has cooling properties.

Some food / herbs that a Tropical type person can consume more are:

  1. Red bean
  2. Green bean
  3. Barley (from China, not from Holland)
  4. Winter Melon
  5. Bitter gourd
  6. Cucumber
  7. Lotus Root
  8. Corn

Food / herbs to avoid or consume less are:

  1. Spicy and deep fried food
  2. Mutton
  3. Ginger
  4. Garlic

Additional Tips for Tropical Type Person:

Besides exercising regularly, you should avoid sleeping late (after 11pm). Sleeping earlier can help your body to achieve the nature balanced state. If you just change your lifestyle to exercise regularly and sleeping earlier, you will see a huge improvements in how you feel day to day.

Do your best to avoid spicy food because it will feed the ‘heat’ inside your body and make you feel worse in long-term. Your priority is to reduce the ‘heat’ and dampness (湿) inside your body. When you are outside eating dessert or cooking at home, choose green bean and red bean soup over others. If you are choosing beverage, choose China barley drink over others. If you are eating, choose melon-type (winter melon, bitter gourd, cucumber, pumpkin, Loofah, old cucumber etc) of vegetables as they are proven to reduce the dampness in your body. TCM believe 百病多由痰作祟, 怪病从痰治 – this means that many illness are caused by long term dampness in body so do your best to reduce it by following the above advice.

In addition, try to listen to relaxing music to keep you in the relaxed state most of the time. Avoid feeling anxious and frustrated as these feelings will feed the ‘heat’ inside your body.

Water Stag Type – Food and Herbs Recommendation

A person who is water stag type (痰湿体质) often find his / her face oily. You will also notice that you might have phlegm at times. This is due to the liquid / water you consume has not been effectively converted into nutrients and it stored unnecessarily in your body.

Some food / herbs that a water stag type person can consume more are:

  1. Red bean
  2. Barley (from China, not from Holland)
  3. Rice (from China, known as 大米, not from Thailand)
  4. Garlic
  5. Onion
  6. Radish
  7. Ginger
  8. Chinese yam  (山药)
  9. Lotus seed

Food / herbs to avoid or consume less are:

  1. Oily food
  2. BBQ and grilled food
  3. Sweet food such as dessert

Additional Tips for Water Stag Type Person:

The best way to regulate your body back to the balanced state is to exercise moderately. And do bear in mind that after you exercise and perspire, do not take shower immediately. You should only take shower after you stop sweating.

Another tip for you is to eat slower and have more bits before you swallow your food. This will allow your digestive system to break down your food easier instead of worsen your condition.

Yin Deficiency Type – Food and Herbs Recommendation

A person who is Yin Deficiency (阴虚体质) tends to like cold drinks and often feeling his/her palm and feet is very warm. Yin Deficiency also find themselves adapting better to cold environment than to warm environment.

You may find yourself hot-tempered and getting impatient at things. Some people also have difficulties falling asleep at night because of heatyness in the body (heart, 阴虚心火旺). For such body type, you should consume more food with cooling properties.

The following are the food / herbs that a Yin Deficiency type person can consume more to regain Yin energy in the body to achieve balanced state:

  1. Tomato
  2. Lotus root
  3. Cucumber
  4. Winter melon
  5. Black sesame
  6. Green bean
  7. Tofu
  8. Banana
  9. Pear

Food / herbs to avoid or consume less are:

  1. Mutton
  2. Walnut
  3. Chinese chives (韭菜)
  4. Ginger
  5. Garlic
  6. Lychee
  7. Longan (龙眼)

Additional Tips for Yin Deficiency Type Person

If possible, do incorporate noon nap into your routine especially between 11am to 1pm. In TCM, we believe that these two hours is where yin is at its strongest in our body so if you take time to take a nap (around 15 min, but not more than 45 min) between these timings, it will help your body to restore your yin. Sleeping late is a destructive way to decrease yin energy in our body, hence, do your best to sleep as early as possible (between 9 to 11pm).

Having exposed to mid noon sun will also make your body loses yin energy. Thus, carry an umbrella around if you see that the sun is strong and you need to go outdoor.

Avoid eating spicy stuff as it will further hurt your Yin energy in your body.
